Beginner Ranks 初級

White Belt
Concept: “Purity” (the blank canvas)

1. Jab-Cross-Left Hook (attack and defense)
– parry (拍手), parry, SHIELD (高盾)
– parry parry, INSERT (截)
– parry, parry, DUCK / WEAVE
– parry, parry, backward shuffle

2. Right round kick (low / leg): defend against punches as you kick
– pivot with shoulder defense
– angle step (“monkey tail” kick)
– pivot and cover rear hand with “wing hand” (返手)

3. Counter attacks (vs jab-cross-left hook)
– SHIELD and left hook
– INSERT and right cross
– DUCK / WEAVE and right cross
– backward shuffle, forward shuffle back in and right cross
– backward shuffle, right round kick

4. Defense against right round kick (low / leg)
– step in (angle / diagonal)
– step in (angle / diagonal) and right cross
– leg shield / shin block / knee block (摧)
– backward shuffle

5. Basic knee strike
– long knee (right)
– switch step (left) knee
– Jab, right knee
– Jab, cross, switch step (left) knee
– Jab, cross, hook, right knee
– smack (left hand) and grab (right hand), right knee
neck mopping or top of head pull
– smack (right hand) and grab (left hand), switch step (left) knee

6. Basic combinations
– jab, right round kick
pivot and angle step
– jab-cross, switch step (left) round kick
inner thigh or sweep
– jab-cross-left hook, right knee (each with right hand)
– jab-cross-left hook, backward shuffle, right round kick (low / leg)
– jab-cross-left hook, angle step round kick (“monkey tail”)
– left hook, left angle step right round kick

7. Basic footwork drills
– jab-cross, backward shuffle (against left hook / right cross)
– forward shuffle with jab (coordinate hand and feet)
– forward shuffle with right cross (coordinate hand and feet)
– jab-cross, leg shield, step down, SWITCH STEP left round kick

8. Introduction to clinch / don’t let them touch you
– intercept vs. reach (if very circular)
– pop vs. reach (捧)
– pass vs. reach (引)
– pluck (採)
– drag (“tearing”) (撕)

Yellow Belt
Concept: “Seeing the light” (Beginning to understand)

1. Basic kicking techniques (using heavy bag, Thai pads, kicking shields)
– right round kick (low)
– right round kick (body)
– switch step (left) round kick (low)
– switch step (left) round kick (body)
– left (lead) front kick (push) (穿腿)
– right (rear) front kick (thrust) (穿腿)

2. Defense
– SHIELD (高盾) vs. hooks and overhands
– parry, parry, wrap (抄) vs. jab-cross-hook
– body SHIELD (中盾) vs. body round kick (right)
– lead leg shield / shin block / knee block (摧) vs. left round kick (low)
– rear leg shield / shin block / knee block (摧) vs. left round kick (low)
– body SHIELD (中盾) vs. body round kick (left)

3. Right round kick (body): defend against punches as you kick
– pivot with shoulder defense (“violin shoulder”)
– angle step (so head is off “center line”
– cover rear had with “wing hand” (返手)

4. Counter attacks / flow drills
– switch step (left) round kick vs. right round kick (low)
– right round kick vs. switch step (left) round kick (low)
– right cross vs. right round kick (body)
– jab OR left hook vs. switch step (left) round kick (body)

5. Basic combinations (punching to set up kicks)
– jab, pivot right round kick (body)
– jab-cross, switch step left round kick (inside of thigh)
– Jab-cross, switch step left round kick (body)
– right cross, switch step left round kick (inside of thigh)
– right cross, switch step left round kick (body)
– left hook, left angle step right round kick (body)

6. Right round kick (low) follow ups (if blocked)
– right cross
– right round kick (body) (“double up”)
– right front kick (“double up”)
– switch step (left) round kick (body)

7. Side shuffle (閃步)
– evasion
right side step vs. jab (outside)
left side step vs. cross (outside)
– setting up kicks
right side step, right hamstring kick (“Holland kick”)
right side step, right chopping leg (劈腿)
left side step, left round kick (lead leg inner thigh)
left side step, left round kick (outside of rear thigh)

8. Introduction to clinch / upper body pummeling
– neck (collar tie) template
double neck tie
one hand on neck, one on arm
both hands on arms (“steering wheel”)
– conceptual
push and pull (吞吐)
elbows down and hips back vs. level change (架)
– attacking with the knee strike (“the four knees”)
lift knee (to face) (武松脱拷)
